Joint Rights of Way Improvement Plan

Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol City and South Gloucestershire Councils, with the West of England Partnership, have prepared a Joint Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP).

The Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP) is being put together to plan how the councils manage the 1300 miles (2100km) of public rights of way in Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 requires Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol City and South Gloucestershire Councils, as highway authorities, to produce a ROWIP. The Councils have decided to produce a plan that covers all three councils.

The Joint Rights of Way Improvement Plan

The following statements are made by Bath & North East Somerset Council, Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council with the West of England Partnership:

20th November 2007:

Publication of the Joint Rights of Way Improvement Plan

Image of front cover of Draft ROWIPThe Joint Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP) has been published today.

This will now guide the councils and others as we improve the Public Rights of Way network towards meeting the needs of all members of the community.

As we have prepared the ROWIP we have been considering the comments and ideas of many organisations and individuals. We have received over 3000 completed questionnaires. The public and organisations attended consultation events and comments and suggestions were made on our draft document. Members of the Joint Local Access Forum have also been involved as the ROWIP has been developed. We are very grateful to all of those who have helped us in this way.

The councils have now published the ROWIP.  Paper copies of the ROWIP are being distributed over coming days to organisations and members of the public who have been involved in the preparation of the ROWIP.

The ROWIP is available here as a PDF document to download.  This file is very large and suitable only for broadband-type internet connections:

We welcome your views.

The Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP) is being put together to plan how we manage the 1300 miles (2100km) of public rights of way in Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 requires Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol City and South Gloucestershire Councils, as highway authorities, to produce a ROWIP. The Councils have decided to produce a plan that covers all three councils.

We are grateful for the input that we have already received, including from the Joint Local Access Forum, residents in Timsbury, Sodbury, Oldbury-on-Severn and Brislington and others who attended consultation events in January, as well as almost 3000 people who completed questionnaires in 2006.

The Councils have published:

»  the Draft Joint Rights of Way Improvement Plan itself, and

»  an A5 sized Consultation document that highlights the main points of the plan.

...together with a Consultation Questionnaire for you to complete and return to the address below by the 12th August 2007.

These documents are on this website in two formats:

»  High quality format for users with fast internet connections such as broadband

»  Reduced quality format for users with slower internet connections such as dial-up internet
